Commencement Ceremony in Progress
As the summer graduation anthem begins, a new journey of pursuing dreams unfolds. On the morning of June 19, the 2025 graduation ceremony of China University of Mining and Technology(CUMT) was grandly held at the gymnasium of the Nanhu Campus. More than 5,800 undergraduates and over 3,200 postgraduates successfully completed their studies and are about to bid farewell to their alma mater, embarking on a new chapter in life.
Liu Bo, Secretary of the University Party Committee; Zhao Hongwei, President of the University; Zhao Yuemin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chair of the University Academic Committee; and other university leaders attended the ceremony. The ceremony was presided over by Li Jiangtao, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee.
President Zhao Hongwei delivered a speech titled “Cultivate Virtue, Pursue Knowledge, Act with Diligence, and Embrace Responsibility.” On behalf of the university, he extended warm congratulations to the students who had successfully completed their studies and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the teachers and parents who had devotedly supported and encouraged them. He noted that the Class of 2025 not only forged their own brilliant chapters through hard work but also collectively witnessed a period of rapid development at the university. They are vivid participants and witnesses of CUMT's progress. The university motto “Esteem Virtue and Value Learning” is a concentrated reflection of its educational philosophy and a spiritual guide for CUMT students. Centering on the themes of “virtue, learning, action, and responsibility,” he offered four expectations for all graduates. First, the foundation of being a person lies in self-cultivation: nurture the heart and uphold morality. He shared the story of retired professors Li Anchang and Cao Yingluo, who donated their life savings to establish the “Mathematics Chunhui Inspirational Scholarship,” encouraging students to be grateful, to give back, and to measure their words and deeds with an inner moral compass, establishing firm personal integrity. Second, the way of learning values the pursuit of knowledge: seek truth and explore bravely. He cited the example of distinguished alumnus and former President Xie Heping, an academician who led his team to make original breakthroughs in cutting-edge fields such as underground space development and hydrogen production from seawater. He encouraged students to carry a deep sense of national mission, to embody the spirit of “valuing learning,” to scale the heights of science, and to align personal ideals with national development, thereby achieving higher personal value in a broader world. Third, success in action relies on dedication: value hard work and remain focused. He shared the story of Ge Shanfeng, an alumnus from the Class of 2009 of the School of Environment and Surveying and Mapping, who has spent 16 years dedicated to frontline work in remote mining areas, earning national honors including the National Model Worker and the May 1st Labor Medal. This was to encourage students to stay grounded, persevere, and create extraordinary achievements in ordinary positions through continuous effort and dedication. Fourth, taking responsibility requires commitment: serve the nation with devotion. He cited the example of alumnus Yang Cong from the School of Public Administration, who has been rooted in the remote Ali region of Tibet for 11 years, hoping that students would focus on their duties and serve the nation and society. With ideals as the blade to cut through confusion and practical work as the pen to write responsibility, youth should be tempered into steel in the furnace of dedication.
During the representative speech segment, Professor Yang Hui from the School of Resources and Earth Sciences expressed heartfelt farewell and best wishes to the graduates who are about to set sail. She encouraged them to dare to choose, stay true to their choices, and shoulder their responsibilities; to reshape themselves through love, refine their value through perseverance, and elevate their purpose through dedication. Undergraduate representative Yang Tengrui, a student majoring in Safety Engineering from the School of Safety Engineering, recounted his four-year journey at CUMT exploring the light of safety. He shared how he gained confidence in academia, understood national responsibility through practical service, and pursued patriotic ideals in research. He called on his fellow graduates to remember the mission of CUMT students and integrate their personal dreams into the cause of national energy security. Graduate representative Wang Baiyi, a Mechanical Engineering student from the School of Mechanical and ElectricalEngineering, told the story of his seven-year journey of growth at CUMT. He pledged to uphold the university motto of “Esteem Virtue and Value Learning” and to continue advancing in the field of robotics, contributing youthful strength to the development of extreme-environment robotics and embodied intelligence in China. As the international student representative, Korna from Guinea, who majored in Civil Engineering at the School of Mechanics and Civil Engineering, expressed her deep affection and sincere gratitude to China and CUMT. She stated that she would remain at CUMT to pursue further academic work in her field, and looked forward to applying her expertise in the future to promote engineering cooperation and exchange between China and Africa.
At the ceremony, outstanding graduates, exemplary figures in grassroots employment, and advanced individuals were commended. Secretary Liu Bo, President Zhao Hongwei, and other leaders presented honorary certificates to the awardees. Vice President Wang Zhongbin read the commendation documents. Graduate representatives presented flowers to faculty members, expressing heartfelt gratitude for their tireless guidance. In return, faculty representatives gifted graduates with farewell presents, conveying the alma mater’s sincere wishes for their bright futures. A video titled “Mining Memories,” featuring graduate reflections and recollections, was also screened. The graduation ceremony concluded with the stirring melody of the university anthem of China University of Mining and Technology.
Graduates of the Class of 2025, college leaders, officials from relevant departments, faculty representatives, counselors, and class advisors attended the ceremony in person. Some parents and off-campus graduates watched the event via online livestream. Chen Cong, a Ph.D. student from the School of Information and Control Engineering, said, “Seven years of study at CUMT have filled me with gratitude for the nourishment of my alma mater and the guidance of my mentors. In the future, I will uphold the motto of ‘Esteem Virtue and Value Learning,’ dedicate myself to scientific innovation for the nation, and work tirelessly in the field of education, devoting my lifelong efforts to the glory of my alma mater.” Qin Yuelei, an undergraduate from the School of Humanities and Arts, said, “Graduation is not the end but a new beginning. In the future, I will keep the CUMT spirit in my heart and go to Guangxi to teach. There, I will nurture hope with love, embody responsibility through perseverance, and respond with action to the heartfelt call of ‘China University of Mining and Technology is my home.’”
